Why a site survey saves more than it costs

The cheapest hour on any utilities project is the one spent measuring before anything is ordered.

Most of the expensive problems on a piping or HVAC installation are decided before a single length of pipe arrives. A riser that cannot be got up the stairwell. A chilled water main routed through a space the client was about to partition. An electrical supply that turns out to be single phase.

None of those are installation problems. They are survey problems, and they cost multiples of what the survey would have cost.

    What a proper survey records

    • Existing utility routes, sizes and condition — not what the drawing says, what is actually there.
    • Access: door widths, stair turns, lift capacity, crane positions, and the hours they are available.
    • Available electrical service at the point of connection, confirmed by measurement.
    • Operating constraints — what cannot be shut down, and for how long it can be.
    • Ceiling voids and service zones, checked against every other trade working in the same space.

We would rather spend a day on site at the start than a week unpicking something afterwards.
