Choosing between SS and MS pipe for industrial lines
The decision is rarely about strength. It is about what the line carries, how hot it runs, and what cleaning it will see.
Stainless steel and mild steel both make perfectly good industrial pipework. Choosing badly between them is where the cost appears — either in corrosion a few years in, or in money spent on a grade the line never needed.
Where stainless earns its price
Corrosion resistance, hygiene and cleanability. That makes it the right answer for water treatment plants, chilled and process water distribution, food and beverage lines, and anything in a pharmaceutical facility where the line is cleaned in place or has to be validated.
Where mild steel is the sensible answer
Steam lines and boiler connections, fuel and gas handling, and high-temperature media in chemical and process plants. Seamless and ERW mild steel handle those duties well, and the cost difference on a large run is substantial.
The questions that actually decide it
- What does the line carry, and is it corrosive to carbon steel?
- What temperature and pressure does it see in normal and upset conditions?
- Will it be cleaned in place, and with what?
- Does it have to be validated or documented to GMP?
- Is it buried, exposed, or in a humid or chemically aggressive atmosphere?
